About
While enrolled in the BA Photography programme at Middlesex University in London, Derby Ashitei refined his documentary approach to photography. Prior to this, he enjoyed photographing events and portraits. At Middlesex, he began to develop his own visual storytelling language. His photographic style conveys a sense of movement and a profound relationship with his subjects. The way in which Derby approaches his subject matter is through research and investigation. Photographers such as Matthew Finn and Sian Davey have had a substantial influence on his fluid and uninhibited approach to photography. Both artists have developed long-term projects with family members and close acquaintances in order to convey long-term projects about grief, loss, dementia, and Down syndrome through intimate personal portraits. Derby, like them, chooses natural locations and light for his slow-burning investigative practise, which has led him to date close relatives and friends, including his late wife. Currently working on a family documentary, Derby uses his own work to navigate his own trauma and grief after the loss of his wife.
